Is that a Foreign Body? A Systematic Approach to Animal Radiographs

Speaker: Catheryn Walsh

Veterinary surgeons are presented with vomiting patients almost on a daily basis in General Practice. One of the most common reasons for vomiting in a dog or cat is ingestion of a foreign body. Abdominal radiography is still the most useful diagnostic tool to rule in or out a gastrointestinal foreign body. In this lecture you will learn the characteristics to look for that will help you decide whether there is intestinal obstruction secondary to a foreign body. In those radiographs that are inconclusive, we discuss other diagnostic tools available to help make the decision about whether to “cut or not to cut”.

The New Graduate Veterinarian Guide to Brachycephalic Dogs

Speaker: Melissa Kozaruk

Understanding the unique characteristics and common health issues of brachycephalic dogs is key to providing the best care. This webinar presented by Dr Melissa Kozaruk will equip new graduate veterinarians with tips and tricks for performing a thorough physical examination on brachycephalic dogs. The webinar will introduce practical ways to improve treatment of brachycephalic dogs via low stress handling, tips for anaesthesia, and creating long-term care plans. Educating pet owners on possible surgical options and knowing when to refer will also be discussed. As a bonus for this webinar, Dr Melissa provide you with a copy of her brachy physical exam checklist, so you can go into your next brachy consult well prepared!

Nourish to Flourish: Advanced Feeding Strategies for Hospitalised Patients

Speaker: Dr Jean Gulbransen

This hour-long educational presentation will explore the pathophysiology of negative nutritional events in stressed, diseased, or injured cats and dogs. The lecture will reference multiple scientific studies to examine the relationship between caloric intake and outcomes in hospitalised patients.

The session will also cover methods for initiating feeding in hospitalised animals, long-term nutritional management, and available feeding options. Key topics will include feeding protocols, calculations for determining resting energy requirements, refeeding syndrome, feeding tube types and complications, and patient monitoring.

A case study of a canine patient with Diabetic Ketoacidosis will be presented to illustrate the practical application of these concepts.
