- Veterinarians
- April 12, 2021
- RACE-approved for 20 CE credits
4-week course on abdominal emergencies in pets.
What you'll learn
Medical emergencies of the abdomen include many serious diseases. Diseases such as acute necrotising pancreatitis, acute liver failure, severe gastroenteritis, and parvovirus enteritis can all cause significant patient morbidity and mortality if not managed appropriately.
This 4-week course will provide up-to-date reviews on the diagnosis and management of these important diseases in dogs and cats. Explore the week-by-week breakdown of the course content below!
Week 1: The Acute Abdomen
Many patients with abdominal emergencies will present with acute or severe abdominal discomfort – the so-called “Acute Abdomen”. This week, we’ll explore how to determine the cause of abdominal disease, and whether it is surgical or medical, so that the most appropriate treatment protocol is applied to the patient for the best outcome!
Week 2: Acute Pancreatitis
This week is focused on the diagnosis and management of the patient with acute pancreatitis. We’ll review current literature of diagnosis of pancreatitis, detail sonographic appearance of pancreatitis, and detail the pathophysiology of acute severe necrotising pancreatitis as well. Treatment protocols will be provided, including a discussion of the management of sepsis associated with necrotising pancreatitis, as well as the importance of nutritional therapy.
Week 3: Acute Vomiting and Diarrhoea
Acute gastroenteritis is a feature of many intestinal diseases, including infectious diseases such as parvovirus enteritis to haemorrhagic enteritis syndrome, and even toxin ingestion. This week, we’ll review the treatment and supportive care of the patient with acute vomiting and diarrhoea, using parvovirus enteritis.
Week 4: Acute Liver Failure
Acute liver failure is a relatively uncommon, but very serious condition that can result in severe patient illness and sepsis. We’ll discuss aetiology, diagnostics and therapy of acute severe liver injury, along with general supportive care for the liver patient, including management of hepatic encephalopathy!
