From DKA and hyperosmolar syndrome – to thyrotoxicosis and hypoglycaemia – cats do endocrine emergencies in dramatic fashion! This two-week online course provides a practical, evidence-based guide to both diagnosing and managing the most critical endocrine emergencies in feline practice.

We focus on the life-threatening complications of common diseases: Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA), thyroid storm in hyperthyroidism, and crises related to other endocrine disorders – including hyperaldosteronism and complications of the management of diabetes mellitus. We’ve reviewed the refereed literature, so you can move beyond theory to actionable protocols for stabilization, fluid therapy, and monitoring. Learn how to navigate the complexities of insulin therapy, interpret and manage electrolyte derangements in DKA, and handle the crashing hyperthyroid cat. This course is designed to give you the confidence to manage these critical cases from presentation through the first 72 hours of care and beyond!

Course Outline

Welcome to Week 1. We tackle the most common feline endocrine emergency: Diabetic Ketoacidosis. We’ll start by reviewing the pathophysiology that leads to this critical state, to build a step-by-step approach to stabilization, using current literature to guide your choices in fluid therapy, potassium and phosphorus supplementation, and the initiation of insulin. You’ll learn how to safely start a low-dose, constant-rate infusion of insulin, interpret serial blood gas and electrolyte results, and avoid common pitfalls in DKA management. By the end of the week, you’ll have a clear protocol to confidently manage these complex cases.
In Week 2, we address other high-stakes endocrine emergencies. First, we cover “thyroid storm” or severe thyrotoxicosis. You’ll learn to recognize the cat in a cardiovascular crisis from hyperthyroidism – as well as how to manage it and then review acute presentations of other endocrinopathies, including critical illnesses related to hyperaldosteronism and hypothyroidism. Finally, we’ll discuss the critical patient with an unclear diagnosis, focusing on prioritizing your diagnostic and therapeutic steps when time is limited.
