Gastrointestinal foreign bodies can be some of the most rewarding surgical emergency cases. However, a simple procedure can quickly turn into a life-threatening situation if inadequate intestinal healing results in septic peritonitis. In this webinar, we will discuss surgical techniques for foreign body retrieval at each level of the GI tract (gastrotomy, enterotomy, intestinal resection-anastomosis). Using a case study format and step by step instructions with plenty of images and videos, we will focus on preoperative stabilization, intraoperative decision making and postoperative care, to maximize the chances of successful intestinal healing. The goal is to improve your skills in patient assessment and your confidence in the OR, so that you can sleep at night after your next foreign body surgery!

In the middle of a busy day (or night), a deep chested dog presents with non-productive retching. You suspect GDV, now what? In this webinar, we will cover a case-based, practical approach to GDV that will allow you to treat your next case with confidence. Topics covered include preoperative stabilization and diagnostics, gastric decompression, a very user-friendly gastropexy technique, intraoperative decision making and post operative care.

How do I surgically access regions of the abdomen I can’t see well? What do I do if I don’t have a surgical assistant? How do I remove a linear foreign body if I can’t work out where it’s anchored? What if the two ends of my resection-anastomosis have different luminal diameters? My post operative patient won’t eat, what now? All these questions and more will be answered in this webinar, which aims to give a series of practical hints or ‘surgery hacks’ that I have found useful for gastrointestinal surgery. We will also cover the detection and management of some common post operative complications in patients undergoing GI surgery.

Bronwyn Fullagar BVSc(Hons), MS, Diplomate ACVS-SA Specialist Small Animal Surgeon
Dr. Bronwyn Fullagar is a specialist small animal surgeon based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. She earned her Bachelor of Veterinary Science degree a the University of Queensland in 2007 and spent 3 years after graduation in mixed and small animal general practice in Australia and the United Kingdom. She moved to Canada in 2011 to undertake a rotating small animal internship in Calgary. Dr. Fullagar went on to complete a residency in small animal surgery and a Master of Science degree at the Ohio State University, during which she published research in medial patellar luxation and pancreatic islet transplantation. She returned to Calgary in 2015 and was awarded Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2016. Since then, she has worked as a specialist small animal surgeon in Canada, Australia and the United States. Dr. Fullagar performs a wide variety of soft tissue surgery, orthopaedic surgery and neurosurgery procedures, and particularly enjoys complex soft tissue surgery, minimally invasive surgery and surgical oncology. She has a special interest in teaching and has worked as a surgical instructor at the University of Calgary, as well as for World Vets (Nicaragua) and Worldwide Veterinary Service (Thailand). In her spare time, Bronwyn enjoys trail running with her dog, Arnie, skiing, adventure travel and surfing.
