What's in the Course?

The liver is a complex organ, with complex function. This section will review the structure and function of the normal liver, and outlines the pathophysiology of hepatocellular dysfunction as it applies to dogs and cats. Additionally, the clinical pathology and diagnostic imaging of the patient with liver disease is discussed.
Acute liver failure – also known as acute hepatic necrosis, is characterised by massive hepatocellular damage, destruction of hepatic parenchyma, and the associated reduction in liver function. This is frequently coupled with systemic inflammatory response syndrome, sepsis and vasogenic and toxic encephalopathy. This section discusses this important condition in detail.
This section focuses on inflammatory diseases of the liver, bile ducts and extra-hepatic biliary tree. Additionally, a discussion of hepatic neoplasia and bile duct obstruction is covered, including diagnostic imaging and treatment.
Porto-systemic shunts and hepatic encephalopathy frequently present to the emergency clinician with life-threatening abnormalities of liver function and neurological function. This section presents essential pathophysiology of both of these conditions, diagnostic evaluation and treatments. Additionally, the important condition of feline hepatic lipidosis is discussed.
