This webinar will present an overview of the science behind nutrigenomics and development of pet foods for weight loss. Viewers will be taught the difference between nutrigenetics vs nutrigenomics. A basic understanding of how gene expression is measured and influenced by nutrition and other factors will be introduced. In addition, nutrient effects on gene expression in cell culture as a means to increase predictive value of success for new food formulations will be discussed. Finally, an example of how nutrigenomics is translated into simple and easy to use weight loss products resulting in highly effective clinically successful weight loss for pets will be highlighted.

Steve C. Zicker

MS, DVM, PhD Diplomate ACVN and ACVIM (LAIM)

Dr. Zicker received his MS in biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1982, his DVM from the University of California-Davis in 1986 and his PhD in Nutrition from the University of California-Davis in 1993. He also served an internship in medicine and surgery at Texas A&M University and a residency in medicine at the University of California-Davis. Following his graduate education, Dr. Zicker spent one year as a lecturer and postgraduate researcher at the University of California-Davis and 18 months in private practice in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He joined Hill’s Pet Nutrition as a Veterinary Clinical Scientist in 1996. He is currently in the Global Professional Veterinary Affairs group at Hill’s Pet Nutrition Inc. Dr. Zicker is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and the American College of Veterinary Nutrition. He also served as a Fulbright Scholar to Mekelle University, Ethiopia from 2006-2007. His major professional interests are comparative nutrition and nutrition education.
