Summary
In this program participants will learn about current diagnostics for acute and chronic kidney disease in dogs and cats. Participants will review IRIS staging of both acute kidney injury and chronic kidney disease and how to use these guidelines to target therapy. Discussion will include conventional testing for renal function and focus on renal biomarkers and emerging tests for earlier detection of kidney disease and associated problems including RenalTech, urinary Cystatin B and Fibroblast Growth Factor-23 (FGF-23). This program will also briefly discuss management strategies including dietary intervention, phosphorus restriction and binders, and treatment of secondary issues. Lastly, discussion will include supportive care measurements, particularly for patients with chronic kidney disease, and available evidence for these treatments.

Jenny Howard is a St. Louis native who received her doctorate of veterinary medicine from the University of Missouri in 2019. She completed a one-year rotating internship at Auburn University before returning to Mizzou for a residency in Small Animal Internal Medicine which she just completed in July of this year. Her clinical interests include critical care, renal disease and anything feline. In her free time she enjoys playing volleyball, practicing yoga, and hanging out with her four handsome cats Jet, Silver, Pierre, and Francois.
