What you'll learn

This special 1-week course is all about special anaesthetic techniques for your patients – from local and regional anaesthesia to TIVA and PIVA – these techniques facilitate effective analgesia and anaesthesia – especially in emergency and critically ill patients. You will receive a comprehensive eBook, quick reference guides, and the latest information on how to optimise your next complex anaesthesia patient!
This tutorial will outline how to identify and correct potential risk factors in your patients, and how to develop an anaesthetic plan that minimises the likelihood of anaesthetic complications.
This tutorial will focus on techniques of MAC reduction to minimise the negative effects of inhalant anaesthetic medications, using techniques of total or partial intravenous anaesthesia, local nerve blocks in a wide range of disease conditions requiring anaesthesia.
This tutorial will focus on how to effectively use local and regional anaesthesia and adjuncts to provide complete analgesia for your patients. Learn how to identify peripheral nerves using ultrasound, appropriate dosing and location of local nerve blocks, and how to both avoid and manage complications.

Learning Outcomes

At the conclusion of this course, the participant will have a sound knowledge of the following: The principles and practice of risk reduction in the compromised anaesthetic patient, including patient assessment, manipulation of anaesthetic technique, and pre-anaesthetic therapies aimed at risk reduction The specific pre- intra-and post-anaesthetic requirements for patients with respiratory disease, cardiac disease, kidney disease, neurological disease, sepsis, trauma and geriatric or paediatric conditions The principles and practice of MAC reduction to improve anaesthetic safety in a wide range of clinical conditions The principles, practice and application of local and regional anaesthesia in the critical and emergency patient.

Melissa Kozaruk

BVSc(Hons) GCert(U/S)

Melissa graduated with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science (First class honours) from the University of Sydney in 2012. Currently, Melissa is the hospital director of a busy small animal GP clinic on the Central Coast, NSW Australia, and works relief in emergency and critical care.
Melissa has completed further post graduate training in soft tissue surgery, emergency medicine and endocrinology through Massey University, New Zealand. Melissa has a Graduate Certificate in Small Animal Abdominal Ultrasound through Melbourne University.

Melissa has a particular clinical interest in improving the health and welfare of dogs with brachycephaly (flat-faced dogs) and performs advanced surgeries including BOAS surgery.

Melissa offers modern, evidence-based veterinary care, with an emphasis on great communication and collaboration with pet parents, breeders and other veterinary professionals, to achieve the best quality of life for her patients.

Melissa has been an educator with VetEducation for a number of years and has a passion for teaching and mentoring fellow veterinary professionals.
