Course Outline
Topic 1: Cardiac Emergencies I
This topic provides the latest updates on how to determine the presence of acute heart disease in your patients – including physical examination findings, point of care ultrasound use, biomarkers and ECG diagnostics – so that you can begin life-saving treatment as soon as possible.
Topic 2: Cardiac Emergencies II
This topic provides the latest recommendations on the management of a range of cardiac emergencies, including the acute heart failure of both the dog and cat, cardiac tamponade, the diagnosis and management of severe cardiac arrhythmias, and feline aortic thromboembolism, among many others.
Learning Outcomes
At the conclusion of this course, the participant will have:
- A thorough understanding of the approach to the patient with a cardiac emergency, including the use of physical examination, serum biomarkers, diagnostic imaging and ECG to facilitate diagnosis
- A thorough understanding of the management of the patient with the following conditions
- Acute congestive heart failure caused by valvular disease and cardiomyopathies
- Ventricular tachycardia
- Supraventricular tachycardia
- Severe bradyarrhythmias
- Pericardial effusion and cardiac tamponade
- Aortic thromboembolism (feline)
- An appreciation of the evidence-base present in veterinary cardiology as it relates to the management of commonly encountered cardiac emergencies
