Course Outline
Week 1: Updates in Toxicology I - Antidotes and Novel Therapies
This topic will review the latest literature on the use of intravenous lipid emulsion therapy and other novel antidotes in the treatment of a wide range of toxins in small animal practice. We’ll also take time to review the use of long-standing therapies such as activated charcoal, cathartics and gastrointestinal binding agents – so you can be sure you are using the right medication, at the right time, to help your poisoned patient.
Week 2: Updates in Toxicology II - The Toxins
This week is all about the toxins – from new prescription medications, to the latest illicit drug toxicities, through to rare and bizarre toxins you may have forgotten about – we’ll bring you the latest information on how to recognise, diagnose and treat the newest toxins in dogs and cats!
Learning Outcomes
At the conclusion of this course, the participant will have:
- A sound understanding of the use of novel and traditional antidotes and decontamination agents in small animal toxicology, including activated charcoal, intravenous lipid emulsion therapy and miscellaneous antidotes
- Have a sound understanding of the diagnosis and management of several toxins of recent note, including illicit drugs, pharmaceutical therapies, food toxins, pesticides (including 1080 and MAM); and algae, along with some rare and unusual toxins (including puffer fish and coral toxicity)
