This 3-week online course covers current approaches to recognising and managing severe systemic illness and sepsis in dogs and cats. We will move from the initial systemic inflammatory response through septic shock and into multiple organ dysfunction. Each week addresses practical diagnostics, fluid and vasopressor therapy, antimicrobial selection, and organ-specific support. This course is ideal for anyone seeing patients with severe illness, and provides a sound, evidence-based approach to patient management based on the very latest literature – all designed to optimise patient outcome.

Course Outline

We start with the systemic inflammatory response – what drives it, how it presents, and how to distinguish infectious from non-infectious triggers. The focus is on early recognition – in both dogs and cats. We will review the limitations of SIRS criteria and introduce more specific markers that improve diagnostic accuracy. We’ll conclude with a systematic approach to management of the patient, and how to minimise the risk of disease progression to sepsis and septic shock.

This week covers the septic shock patient. We will discuss fluid selection and volume, vasopressor choices, and monitoring parameters beyond blood pressure. Antimicrobial timing and source control are addressed as core components of therapy. The session also covers the value of blood lactate, the use of corticosteroids and the syndrome of critical-illness related corticosteroid insufficiency. Finally, you’ll get the latest practical algorithms for treatment guidelines, including escalation and de-escalation.

The final week of the course addresses the progression of critical illness to multiple organ dysfunction – acute kidney injury, liver dysfunction, coagulopathy, acute respiratory distress syndrome, and gastrointestinal failure. We will review monitoring strategies for each system, supportive care (fluid diuresis, ventilation, nutrition, transfusion triggers), and when to consider advanced resuscitation. The discussion includes prognostic indicators to help facilitate realistic conversations with owners about outcomes and quality of life. We finish with a framework for ongoing reassessment and decision-making in the critically ill patient.

Learning Outcomes

Dr Philip Judge

BVSc MVS PG Cert Vet Clin Stud MACVSc (Vet. Emergency and Critical Care; Medicine of Dogs)

Philip graduated from Massey University in New Zealand in 1992, and spent 7 years in small animal practice before undertaking a 3-year residency in veterinary emergency and critical care at the University of Melbourne in 1998.

Following his residency, Philip worked for nearly 6 years at the Animal Emergency Centre in Melbourne, becoming the Senior Veterinarian at the centre in 2004. In 2006, Philip undertook a 1-year surgical externship before moving to Townsville to take up the position of Senior Lecturer in Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care at JCU. Philip is also co-founder, and director of Vet Education Pty Ltd (www.veteducation.com) – one of Australia’s leading providers of online continuing education for veterinarians and veterinary nurses.

Philip has published numerous manuals and guides concerning emergency medicine, including a CRI manual, haematology and biochemistry interpretation guide, emergency anaesthesia guide, and a ventilation therapy manual for small animals, in addition to being published in peer reviewed literature.

Philip’s key interests in veterinary science include respiratory emergencies, ventilation therapy, envenomations and toxicology.
