Course Blurb
This 3-week online course for veterinary nurses and technicians focuses on the recognition and management of common anaesthetic complications. We will cover the big three: hypotension, hypothermia and abnormal respiration, along with a number of others, including vomiting/regurgitation, and prolonged anaesthetic recovery. Each week emphasises practical monitoring, early intervention, and clear communication with the veterinary team required to manage these complications in a stress-free manner – so you can support your patient in the best way possible.

Week 1 - Updates in the Management of anaesthesia-related hypotension

We start with hypotension – the most common intraoperative complication requiring intervention. We’ll focus on a stepwise response: including assessment of anaesthetic depth, when to administer IV fluids (and what type!), the use of vasopressors, and other medications to help resolve persistent hypotension. We will also discuss how to monitor for a response to each intervention, and how and when to escalate interventions!

Week 2 - Management of hypothermia under anaesthesia

This week addresses hypothermia – its causes, consequences, and prevention. We will review heat loss mechanisms during anaesthesia, the effects on drug clearance and recovery time, and the limitations of common warming devices. The focus is on practical nursing strategies: pre-warming, intraoperative insulation, active warming systems, and temperature monitoring sites. We also cover the complications of unmanaged hypothermia – including increases in infection rates, bleeding and hypotension – and how to manage them.

Week 3 - Management of prolonged anaesthetic recovery and other anaesthetic complications

The final week of the course covers the patient that does not recover as expected. We work through a differential checklist – residual drug effects, hypothermia, hypoglycaemia, hypercapnoea, electrolyte disturbances, and undetected intraoperative events. We’ll discuss key nursing interventions that help mitigate the effects too.
Finally, we’ll talk about 3 key abnormalities in the anaesthetised patient – vomiting/regurgitation, abnormal respiration, and bradyarrhythmias – providing simple guidelines to approaching and resolving these crucial situations!

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Identify and implement immediate nursing interventions for anaesthetic complications, including fluid adjustments, vasopressor administration, appropriate patient warming techniques, and respiratory support, as required to provide optimum patient care.
- Recognise the risks and early signs of vomiting and regurgitation under anaesthesia.
- Apply a systematic approach to prolonged recovery, including differentials and documentation.
- Communicate findings and intervention steps in the management of anaesthetic complications clearly so that appropriate action can be applied to the patient.Â
