What you'll learn

A properly functioning urinary tract is essential for life. It has essential roles in electrolyte and acid-base balance, excretion of body waste, and hormone production among a host of complex roles. This 3-week online course will cover the essentials of what you should know about the urinary tract, and how to manage various urinary tract emergencies – including acute kidney injury, urinary tract trauma, bladder rupture and urinary tract obstruction, and a lot more! Check out the week-by-week descriptions below check out the full course content list!
Acute kidney injury is a serious, life-threatening medical emergency. Acute kidney failure can have many causes – including shock, cardiac disease, toxins and even infectious agents as well. Without early recognition and intensive treatment, many patients will develop chronic kidney disease, or may even die. This week, we will look at not only the causes of acute kidney injury, but also how we can reduce patient risk – and in some cases, even prevent kidney injury. We’ll also talk about how to treat the patient with acute kidney injury – including new thoughts on the use of intravenous fluid therapy and diuretics – PLUS, we’l; detail dialysis therapy too!

This week is all about the urinary bladder – including bladder rupture, bladder trauma, bladder infection, and bladder stones, among other conditions. We’ll detail everything you need to know about urine analysis – including how to collect, test and analyse urine to achieve the most accurate results. Finally, we’ll cover nursing the patient with urinary tract disease – including urinary catheter placement and care too!

This week is dedicated to all things urethra – from how to manage the patient with urethral obstruction, urethral trauma, as well as urethral prolapse! In addition, you’ll learn about urinary diversion techniques – used when the urethra is severely diseased, or when the patient is so unstable that they cannot tolerate anaesthesia for corrective procedures. Finally, we’ll complete the course with a step-by-step guide to managing acid-base and electrolyte disorders in lower urinary tract obstruction, as well as anaesthesia of the patient with urethral obstruction!
